Austria and Switzerland Warn on Illegal Peptides: What the 2026 Announcements Say

Many such websites, BASG notes, label the material “for research purposes” or “research grade” while plainly aiming it at human use.
BASG’s core legal point is unambiguous: many of these peptides are unauthorised medicinal products that lack the marketing authorisation required to be sold as medicines, and neither a “research chemical” designation nor a “research use only” claim legitimises their sale for human use. The health concerns it lists are the familiar ones for anonymous online supply: unknown origin and manufacturer, unverified quality and purity, insufficient clinical data for human safety, unknown contamination risk, and undocumented adverse reactions or interactions. The agency warns that both distributors and purchasers can face legal consequences under Austrian law, and invites the public to report suspected peptide webshops to its enforcement team.
Switzerland: Swissmedic, customs and the doping angle
A month later, on 30 June 2026, Switzerland’s medicines regulator Swissmedic — working with the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security and Swiss Sport Integrity (SSI) — issued its own warning about products “straddling the line between medicines, ‘lifestyle’ products and performance-enhancing substances” being imported and sold online to Swiss consumers.
The warning came with numbers from a targeted operation: inspectors examined 46 consignments and detained 23 — 21 classified as doping substances and 2 as unauthorised medicines — with roughly 80% originating from Poland and often mislabelled by unregulated suppliers. Swissmedic’s risk framing mirrors Austria’s: these preparations pose “considerable health risks” because their safety, efficacy and quality are not scientifically verified, and many contain substances banned in sport. Marketing unauthorised medicines is a criminal matter in Switzerland, and the authorities stress that consumers cannot reliably vet these offers through online platforms and social media.
Two regulators, one message. BASG (Austria) and Swissmedic (Switzerland) reached the same place independently: peptide preparations sold online for human use are, in many cases, unauthorised medicines; the “research use only” label does not change that; and the health risk of anonymous, untested injectable product is real. Neither warning is about the existence of peptide science — it is about the supply chain and the human-use framing.
