    Bacteriostatic Water Shelf Life & Storage: Does It Need Refrigeration?

    Unopened bacteriostatic water is stable at room temperature until its labelled expiry.     A sealed bacteriostatic water vial is shelf-stable at controlled room temperature (roughly 15–30 °C) until the expiry date printed on the label. It does not need refrigeration before opening. Keep it in its box, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

    After the first puncture

    The moment you pierce the stopper, the clock starts. Best practice for an opened vial:

  • Refrigerate at 1–6 °C. Cold slows any incidental microbial activity further.
  • Swab the stopper with alcohol before every draw.
  • Treat it as good for ~28 days from first puncture, then discard.
  • Never re-cap a used needle into the vial; always use a fresh needle.

    The 0.9% benzyl alcohol is bacteriostatic — it suppresses bacterial replication but does not sterilise indefinitely. The widely used 28-day in-use window reflects how long that preservative dependably holds back growth across repeated punctures under refrigeration. After that, the conservative call is to switch to a fresh vial.

    28 days is a preservative-protection window, not a guarantee. If sterility is ever in doubt — a missed swab, a questionable puncture — discard early.
